Glenmont,
which includes the town of Bethlehem and the hamlets of Delmar, Elsmere, North Bethlehem, Selkirk and Slingerlands, offers abundant recreational opportunities. Listed below is a brief description and location of several parks located in Glenmont.
In the hamlet of Delmar:
Elm Avenue Park is a 160-acre recreational facility which includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, a hiking trail, ice skating rinks, sledding, a playground and picnic facilities. Many recreational programs are also offered at Elm Avenue Park, including arts & crafts, water aerobics and T'ai Chi.
Five Rivers Environmental Center is a natural history learning center that extends over 350 acres operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset; the Interpretive Center is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 4:30 p.m. Closed State holidays. Just a few of the features of the park include ponds, streams, forests, orchards and fields, a variety of plant life, wildlife and more than 213 species of birds, a butterfly and hummingbird garden, picnic areas and interpretive, hiking and skiing trails.
In the hamlet of Selkirk:
The Hollyhock Hollow Sanctuary is 140-acre park that offers six hiking trails that wind throughout woodland, meadow, creek and garden habitats. Hollyhock Hollow is managed to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, protect natural resources, and offer visitors a chance to explore, relax, and enjoy nature. The trails are maintained in a semi-wild state for the general publics use. Open daily, year-round, dawn to dusk. Unique features include limestone geology, Onesquethaw Creek, gardens for hummingbirds, songbirds and butterflies.
Henry Hudson Park lies on the banks of the Hudson River and offers picnic areas with grills,a softball field, volleyball court, horseshoes, playground, pavilion and boat launch.
Selkirk Park offers a playground and youth sized baseball field, tennis and basketball courts.
North Bethlehem Park features a unique children's playground, picnic areas and a basketball court.
In addition, Glenmont is just a short drive to the Adirondack, Catskill and Berkshire Mountains, which offer world-class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and sightseeing. Several golf courses are also located in the region. Nearby Lake George and Lake Placid offer unlimited water sports, such as boating, fishing, canoeing, rafting, kayaking and swimming. In wintertime, there's cross country skiing, downhill skiing, ice skating, snowboarding and ice fishing. Outdoor fun isn't the only thing to do in the Glenmont area. Albany County is full of historical attractions, museums, galleries, exciting shopping malls and outstanding restaurants. The capital city of Albany has always been a center of cultural events and activities, performing arts, concerts, theater, historic home tours and much more. Places of interest to check out include the Empire State Plaza, the Albany Gallery Center, Albany Institute of History and Art, the Palace Theater and New York State Museum.
